, the nra, was holding their annual convention a week later in colorado. in denver, colorado, only about a 20-minute drive from where the columbine massacre happened. the nra said they would not cancel their conference because of columbine, but they did scale it down to a one-day event. it had been planned to be a three-day thing. and in response to the tragedy at columbine and the awful coincidence of the nra conference that was being planned for just a few days after the shooting the nra put out a statement in the form of a letter to its members that said, "our spirits must endure this terrible suffering together and so must the freedoms that bring us together. we must stand in unshakeable unity, even in this time of anguish." about a week after that an nra spokesman said it really was "not the most appropriate time and place to debate public policy." so not a good time to talk about policy. that was the nra's response to columbine. fast-forward almost exactly eight years to april 16th, 2007. a student at virginia tech in blacksburg, virginia shoots and kills 32 people before killing h

something about the guns. the nra statement today is sadly and shamefully inadequate, calling for more guns and rejecting real action against gun violence. at a defining a historic moment for our nation demanding courageous leadership, the nra has declined to step forward as a credible and constructive partner. the proposal for more armed guards in schools may be helpful in some instances, but it falls short of the strong, serious comprehensive action needed to stop the kind of horrific tragedy that occurred last week. many police that spoke to me on that day when we take a said that the killer was so heavily armed that they doubted they could have stopped him. the american people are demanding real change. the nra proposal fails to offer any real protection from violence. members in connecticut and around the country are writing and calling me to say that the nra does not speak for them. it was a call for action. the nra has failed to answer the call. we need to do something about these guns, about the assault weapons, the kind that was used in the new town tragedy. i am very proud to join

association finally breaks its silence. the nra promising to take part in a gun control debate it has scheduled a friday announcement. more on that in a minute. first to the white house and cnn's dan lothian. >> reporter: white house aides say this will be a chance for the president to talk more about the process of setting up this effort which, as you pointed out, will be led by vice president biden. i'm hearing also as part of that effort will involve homeland security, the education department, health and human services and also the justice department will be looking at ways that they can come up with policies to address this issue of gun violence. again, this is the president reacting to some pressure as to what he would do. you know, right after this violent event took place, the president came out and said that he would take action. that his administration in the coming weeks and months would be looking at ways to prevent something like this from happening again. so this is the first visible action that this administration has taken to -- is taking, rather, to meet that demand.

we have a good chance. obviously we're waiting to see what the nra is going to be offering on friday. i am hoping and i have always reached out to them to say that we need to work together. the interest of what we have is a gun safety and trying to make sure that people are not killed. so we will wait until friday to see what they have to say, but i have to say here in congress, trying to reach out and talk to a number of republican friends, they're not committing on anything yet. so i ask if anybody is talking about it on their side of the aisle. apparently, one or two members are, but they have not come board yet. i hope in the coming days and weeks we will start to see more republicans join us. >> you had quite a reaction after white house spokesperson jay carney, right after the massacre, said this. >> there is, i am sure, will be rather a day for discussion of the usual washington policy debates, but i don't think today is that day. >> your response, congressmember mccarthy? >> i was furious. as soon as that press conference was over, i called the white house. listen, we have go

to keep the pressure on because the other side doesn't stop. the nra and its nuts who oppose -- look of course we are all for the second amendment. we have gone way beyond the second amendment. this is ridiculous. i used to hunt with my uncle, with my dad. i have a 20-gauge double-gauge shotgun or whatever it was when i was probably 13, the biggest thing in my love. i loved it loved my gun. but the idea of these semi oughtics, people need this, this is ridiculous. it's not like automatic rifles it's wrong and we haven't talked about it enough. we have to talk about it enough. here are some of the numbers that i saw again over the weekend. since 1982, 61 mass murders in this country with firearms. 61. eleven of them in schools. nineteen in the workplace. 3 one in military basis. on black friday, this year 154,000 guns were sold. 2 million guns sold in the month of month of november alone. there are 400 gun shops within the four counties of connecticut where newtown is located. and there are more gun sellers in this country today than there are mcdonald's.

a conservative republican who received the nra's highest ratings over four terms in congress. i saw this debate over guns as a powerful symbolic struggle between individual rights and government control. and you know what? in the years after waco and ruby ridge, the symbolism of that debate seemed even more powerful to me. but the symbols of that ideological struggle, they've been shattered by the harvest's own from violent, mind-numbing video games and gruesome hollywood movies that dangerously desensitize those who struggle with mental health challenges. and then add in military-styled weapons and high-capacity magazines to that equation, and tragedy can never be too far behind. you know, there's no easy ideological way forward. if it were only that simple as to blame hollywood or the nra or insufficient funding for mental health, then our task would be completed in no time. but i come to you this morning with a heavy heart and no easy answers. still, i've spent the past few days grasping for solutions and struggling for answers. while daring to question my own long-held belief on these subje
